Material:
– Main fabric: Usually 6oz – 7oz 88% cotton / 12% nylon or 100% FR-treated cotton twill. The cotton/nylon blend is most common — light weight for comfort, nylon for durability.
– FR type: Treated FR on budget versions. Higher-end uses inherent FR modacrylic/cotton blends like 55% modacrylic / 45% cotton.
– Reflective tape: 1″ or 2″ FR-rated segmented silver/yellow striping. Won’t melt or drip. Pattern is ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 2 or 3 compliant.
– Hardware: FR melamine or covered metal buttons — no exposed plastic that melts. Button-front + button cuffs.
– Thread: Nomex FR thread on all seams.
Features:
– Button-down collar: Prevents gap at neck during flash fire
– Two chest pockets: Flapped with button closures — left pocket often has pencil stall
– Tag on left pocket: White FR compliance tag — shows NFPA 2112 / NFPA 70E rating
– Hi-vis striping: Vertical stripes over shoulders + horizontal around chest + bands on sleeves = Class 3 visibility
– Straight hem: Long tail to stay tucked in — untucked FR shirts are a hazard
– Gas tester loop: Small loop above left pocket on some models for H2S monitor
Stuff:
1. Use case: Oil & gas, utilities, refineries. Khaki hides dirt/oil better than light blue. Hi-vis striping adds visibility without full hi-vis color.
2. Layering: This is your outer FR layer. Must wear FR base layer or FR tee underneath. Non-FR undershirt = zero protection.
3. Not fireproof: Buys you 3-4 seconds to escape. Fabric chars instead of melting.
4. Care: Wash in mild detergent only. No bleach, no fabric softener, no starch, no DEET. FR treatment on cotton lasts ∼50-75 industrial washes.
